- Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurates Buddha relic exposition in Leh after 75 years. A historic Buddha Purnima event highlights Ladakh’s spiritual legacy and global message of peace.
Leh, Ladakh: In a moment of profound spiritual and historical significance, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the exposition of the sacred relics of Gautama Buddha in Leh on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima. The event marks the return of the revered relics to Ladakh after a gap of 75 years.
The ceremony was attended by Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh V. K. Saxena, senior officials, monks, scholars, and devotees from across the world.
A Spiritual Homecoming for Ladakh
Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah described the occasion as a “historic and golden moment” for Ladakh. He emphasized that Buddha Purnima, symbolizing the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha, adds deeper significance to the return of the relics.
He noted that Ladakh is not merely a geographical region but a “living laboratory of Buddhist culture and compassion,” echoing sentiments often expressed by Dalai Lama.
Timeless Relevance of Buddha’s Teachings
Highlighting the enduring relevance of Buddha’s teachings even after 2,500 years, Shah stressed that Indian culture continues to guide the world toward peace through dialogue and the Middle Path.
He outlined the core philosophical principles rooted in Ladakh’s Buddhist traditions:
- Seeing reality as it is
- Importance of a Guru and self-reflection
- Balance between knowledge and practice
- Moral discipline as the foundation of wisdom
“These teachings are not only spiritual ideals but practical solutions for a world facing conflict and unrest,” he said.
Ladakh: A Beacon of Buddhist Heritage
Shah traced the deep historical roots of Buddhism in Ladakh, from the influence of Emperor Ashoka to the flourishing of Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions between the 1st and 11th centuries.
He highlighted Ladakh’s role along the ancient Silk Route, which facilitated the spread of Buddhist philosophy across regions like Tibet, China, and Central Asia. Monasteries such as Alchi Monastery stand as enduring symbols of this legacy.
Global Message of Peace and Coexistence
The Home Minister emphasized that the presence of the sacred relics is a reminder of India’s civilizational commitment to peace and harmony. He urged authorities to ensure smooth access for devotees of all faiths to witness the relics.
“Amid diversity and challenges, the path of compassion and peace remains the ultimate solution,” he said.
A ‘Mahakumbh’ of Spiritual Unity
Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena described the event as a rare spiritual confluence, akin to a “Mahakumbh of spirituality.” He highlighted that the relics are not merely artifacts but living symbols of India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
He added that Ladakh continues to embody Buddha’s teachings of non-violence, compassion, and harmony in everyday life.
A Moment of Faith and Reflection
The exhibition has brought together monks, scholars, pilgrims, and visitors from across the globe, transforming Leh into a center of spiritual reflection.
As Ladakh welcomes the sacred relics once again, the occasion stands as a powerful reminder that in times of global uncertainty, the teachings of Lord Buddha continue to illuminate the path forward.
