Over 1,000 km of Metro and 10,000 E-Buses Driving India Towards Net Zero 2070: Tokhan Sahu

New Delhi, 13 October 2025 : The Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Tokhan Sahu, today graced the Namo Bharat Diwas celebrations held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, commemorating the 2nd anniversary of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) – Namo Bharat Trains. The event was organized by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) to celebrate the transformative journey of high-speed regional mobility in India.

NCRTC Chairman and Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Shri Katikithala Srinivas, NCRTC Managing Director Shri Shalabh Goyal, and NCRTC Directors, along with a host of officials, dignitaries, artists, and stakeholders were present at the event.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister emphasized the significance of Namo Bharat; not merely as a transportation project, but as a symbol of India’s speed, pride, and progress.
“Today’s occasion is a celebration of the spirit of innovation, dedication, and teamwork that has made Namo Bharat the new identity of a modern and vibrant India,” he stated. “From the clean stations and well-decorated compartments to the smiling faces of passengers, the confidence of a rising India is visible in every corner of the Namo Bharat experience,” he added. He particularly lauded the role of women in operations, noting with pride that daughters of India are operating and managing Namo Bharat trains and stations, a powerful reflection of India’s commitment to women-led development.

The Minister also highlighted the progress of the 82-km Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut RRTS corridor, which will soon be fully operational, offering seamless, fast, and sustainable regional travel. In addition he noted that planning for new corridors including Delhi–Alwar, Delhi–Panipat, and Delhi–Sonipat–Rewari is progressing swiftly, promising to enhance connectivity and promote balanced regional development.

“Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, urban transportation is being transformed like never before,” said the Minister, underscoring that projects like Namo Bharat are not just technological feats, they are foundational pillars for Viksit Bharat 2047, where every citizen lives with dignity, convenience, and security. He further noted that India’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility is further underlined by its metro rail network, which now exceeds 1,000 kilometers, with nearly an equal length under construction. Alongside, over 10,000 electric buses are being deployed under the PM e-Bus Sewa initiative. “These initiatives are also pivotal in India’s journey towards Net Zero emissions by 2070, providing practical, scalable models of green urban infrastructure.” he said.

The celebrations marked a key milestone in India’s modern transportation history, as the success of Namo Bharat continues to reshape urban connectivity and regional development. During the event the Minister also launched the Namo Bharat Signature Tune, setting an inspiring tone for the celebrations. NCRTC Annual Awards were presented to recognize outstanding contributions to the project’s success. A vibrant showcase of cultural performances added to the celebratory spirit, highlighting the richness of India’s artistic traditions. Distinguished artists were felicitated on stage for their creativity and dedication, reinforcing the importance of culture in national development. The Minister also congratulated the entire NCRTC team for their exceptional work and encouraged the gathering to take pride in the nation’s strides toward a self-reliant, fast, and sustainable India.
