Third BIMSTEC Conference on Traditional Medicine Concludes in Goa

New Delhi. : The Third BIMSTEC Conference on Traditional Medicine Knowledge, Genetic Resources and Intellectual Property Rights and the Second BIMSTEC Nodal Group Meeting concluded today in Goa, with participation from all seven BIMSTEC Member States.

Day 2 continued with a visit to AIIA Goa, showcasing its state-of-the-art facilities in tertiary care and academics, with delegates sharing institutional best practices. A plantation programme was also organised, symbolising the shared commitment to traditional medicine and biodiversity conservation.

The Nodal Group deliberated on and arrived at four key areas of cooperation covering institutional and policy cooperation; standards and trade; documentation and capacity building; and implementation mechanisms. All Member States unanimously agreed to support each other in the areas of intellectual property, genetic resources and traditional medicine knowledge, providing a strong foundation for continued regional cooperation.

Prof. Vaidya P.K. Prajapati, Director, AIIA, said that the conference was significant as it moved beyond discussions to consensus on several important issues, with the ‘Goa Conclusions’ providing a strong foundation for future BIMSTEC cooperation.

Smt. Monalisa Dash, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, appreciated the active participation and constructive cooperation of all Member States.

Mr. Kadirkamu Kandasamy Yoganaadan, Director, Science, Technology & Innovation and Health and Human Resource Development Division, BIMSTEC Secretariat, appreciated the Ministry of Ayush and AIIA Goa for the successful organisation, coordination and hospitality, noting that regional cooperation ultimately seeks to improve people’s well-being and preserve traditional medicine heritage for future generations.

The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Prof. Dr. Sujata Kadam, Dean, AIIA Goa, who expressed gratitude to all BIMSTEC Member States, delegates, experts, officials and stakeholders for their active participation and contribution to the successful conclusion of the conference.
